Carlos Sainz to assess options beyond Audi in 2024 market

Carlos Sainz will be active in this year’s driver market, although his options for next season are still unclear. Amidst rumours linking the Spaniard to an Audi move, it will be crucial to assess the other teams who might consider signing him for 2025.

On paper, a move to the Swiss-based outfit is a logical one. The Sauber brand has previously mentioned the 29-year-old as a potential prospect for their Formula 1 arrival.

This is a fairly logical stance to have, considering the Spaniard is a two-time race winner with multiple podium finishes. For a team preparing to make their debut, a driver of such calibre would be more than welcome – because of both his performance and commercial value.

An established driver like Sainz would undoubtedly add some validity towards the seriousness of the Audi project. However, the Ferrari driver will surely explore options beyond the incoming German manufacturer.

Carlos Sainz to probe the market

For all the excitement surrounding their entry into F1, Audi is unlikely to be competitive when they first join the sport. Compared to the likes of Mercedes and Ferrari, the German giant is still unproven in the pinnacle of motorsport.

They are also understood to be behind the other engine suppliers, both in terms of infrastructure and personnel. This is hardly a surprise, with the process of acquiring F1-calibre staff hardly an easy one.

As a result, Sainz will evaluate the other options on the grid. With Red Bull and Mercedes both having vacancies for next season, it seems logical for the Spaniard to watch the driver market’s evolution.

Whilst he might not be at the top of Red Bull or Mercedes’ shortlists, the last few days prove that anything can happen in Formula 1.

The Sauber option is unlikely to go away any time soon. This means that probing other teams in the meantime could widen his opportunities.
