Mick Schumacher is understood to be without options for an F1 comeback despite his best efforts to find a seat for 2024. The 24-year-old is still Mercedes reserve, but returning to the grid in a full-time capacity seems out of the question.
Having spent two years with Haas, the German was hopeful another team would provide another opportunity.
James Vowles’ Williams was widely seen as an option going into this year. After all, the Williams boss maintains good relations with former colleague Toto Wolff, who is heavily invested in Schumacher’s career.
However, the Mercedes team principal revealed to Ted Kravitz that “all the doors are being closed in front of him.”
This is consistent with the German’s mention of a “Plan B” earlier this week, which looks set to be exercised in the near future. Plenty of racing categories will surely be interested in his services, with Formula E and WEC among them.
The Formula 2 Champion is unlikely to spend another year on the sidelines, meaning a full-time drive will be on the cards for 2024.
Schumacher spoke earlier this week about his spell under Guenther Steiner’s management, criticising the environment in the American team.
In this same interview, the youngster explained that re-establishing himself on the Formula 1 grid remains his hope. However, he conceded that the current landscape is not favourable.
Toto Wolff has spoken on numerous occasions about the potential he sees in Schumacher:
“I think teams are missing out, to be honest. I think he was burned last year.
“You need to give and provide an environment and framework that is different to every driver; we are all different human beings.”
The Austrian concluded that “whoever gets him will have a very good driver”, in statements made at the Canadian GP.
Mick Schumacher falling out of contention could be interpreted as a boost for Logan Sargeant, whose position at Williams is still uncertain.
On paper, this extrapolation has some merit. Then again, James Vowles hasn’t mentioned any of the drivers potentially on his radar. At least for now, Sargeant’s career is well within his control.
