Carlos Sainz reveals that several paths are still available to him for 2025. The Ferrari driver was somewhat blindsided by Lewis Hamilton’s contract with the team in February, and has spent the last four months trying to re-position himself. The consensus is that Sauber and Williams are his two main options. However, Sainz says there are other alternatives.
Two top teams have closed their doors to Carlos Sainz in the last few weeks. Mercedes officially ruled the Spaniard out of contention a few weeks ago, which Toto Wolff made public shortly after.
The Silver Arrows, according to their team principal, are focusing on youth. This confirms ongoing expectations that Kimi Antonelli remains a top priority at Mercedes. With the German constructor committing itself to assessing the 17-year-old’s progress, Sainz was told to look for other options.
Meanwhile, Red Bull secured their 2025 lineup by extending Sergio Perez’s contract. Christian Horner took the very controversial decision to keep continuity at Milton Keynes.
Whilst many observers argue this could cost Red Bull in the Championship, this offers little consolation to Sainz. Still, the decisions from the front-runners narrow down the possible destinations for next year.
Carlos Sainz: I will make my decision soon
Speaking on the Spanish TV Show, ‘El Hormiguero’, Sainz spoke about his future:
“I have my options on the table, ready to take a decision. And I will take the decision very soon because I want to get it out of the way and focus on what remains of this year with Ferrari.”
Some reports have indicated the Spaniard could make his 2025 decision before this weekend’s Spanish GP. Regardless of whether this speculation is precise, it seems clear that clarity will emerge on the 3-time winner’s situation:
“There will be time to think about the next team later. But I have a car that allows me to take podiums and has allowed me to win a race. And I want to focus on that.”
Sainz insists there are many options available
Carlos Sainz made clear that numerous offers are on the table. After playing the waiting game in the first half of 2024, he is ready to make a commitment:
“There isn’t one [option]. There are various, I won’t lie to you. All the teams that haven’t signed both their drivers for next year, I’m on their list. They have offered me a contract, and I could sign with them tomorrow.
“But I won’t sign tomorrow, I will be calm and make a decision soon.”
Williams are increasingly cited as a realistic destination for the 29-year-old. Team principal James Vowles has already pitched himself as the “best option” for Sainz.
Ultimately, as the former Mercedes strategist pointed out in Montreal, it is now Sainz’s call on what his next chapter will be.
