Yuki Tsunoda is happy to be attracting attention from other teams on the grid, explaining that – despite being happy at AlphaTauri – it is positive to be sought after outside the Red Bull stable.
As a driver whose impressive junior career was facilitated by Red Bull, it seems logical that Tsunoda’s ideal scenario would be a promotion to the main team where race victories are within reach.
The Japanese driver has taken a considerable step forward in 2023, showing a level of performance and consistency that has allowed him to outperform teammate Nyck de Vries comfortably.
Having dispatched De Vries with relative ease so far this season, there is little more Tsunoda can do to impress Red Bull and the broader field – especially given the competitiveness of the AT04.
However, speaking in an interview, the 22-year-old has explained that a contract with Red Bull is unlikely in the short term.
“I think Checo has a contract [until the end of] next year, and I guess Red Bull are happy with him,” he told GIVEMESPORT.
“So, for now, I just have to focus on myself and show my value.”
Tsunoda also explained why his current role at AlphaTauri is preferable for his growth and development in Formula 1, whilst making clear that his ambitions are to be at a competitive team:
“I think it’s good to actually stay for now at AlphaTauri and show my performance to all the teams.
“It’s good to have more attention, not just from Red Bull. I don’t get to choose what team I go to…
“So I want to get to a point where I get to choose.”
When Aston Martin announced its engine deal with Honda for 2026, Yuki Tsunoda was quickly mentioned as a possible candidate of interest to the Silverstone squad.
The likes of Pierre Gasly and Carlos Sainz found alternatives to AlphaTauri / Toro Rosso and joined manufacturer teams, aware that options at Red Bull were limited – albeit for different reasons.
Although another year at AlphaTauri seems likely for Tsunoda, this does not prevent him from making a significant move in the driver market in the foreseeable future.
If he continues to establish himself as the stand-out performer at the Faenza squad, it stands to reason that other teams will see the 22-year-old as a highly valuable driver on the market.
Still, to avoid delving too far into hypotheticals, Tsunoda’s priority will be to continue improving as a driver and ensure that he can outperform any future arrivals at AlphaTauri.
