Guenther Steiner leaves Haas F1, replaced by Ayao Komatsu

Haas F1 Team have replaced Guenther Steiner with Ayao Komatsu, ending Steiner’s leadership of the team. This is the first major headline in F1 this season, with Gene Haas making a big change very early in 2024.

Last season, Haas faced serious questions about their leadership for the first time since entering F1.

Fast-forward less than a year, and the US outfit has a new team principal for the first time. Behind the scenes, disagreements over the team’s future fueled this decision.

Nico Hulkenberg joined the US outfit last season and impressed the F1 paddock almost instantly. His qualifying performances were consistently excellent, maximising the potential within a very limited VF-23 car.

Wheels began to turn in 2023

Unfortunately for the German driver, it became clear very quickly that points would be difficult to attain. Haas suffered from catastrophic tyre wear, a problem that persisted throughout the season.

Hulkenberg’s frustration was first signalled after the Italian GP, where he criticised the team for not introducing a circuit-specific rear wing.

COTA was another critical turning point. It was the circuit where Guenther Steiner’s team introduced their only major update package of the season.

At this stage, criticisms were already mounting regarding the lack of ambition at Haas. This rhetoric only intensified after the eighteenth round, which proved the updated VF-23 was hardly an improvement.

Different visions for the future

After finishing last in the standings, the limited investment and infrastructure became an unavoidable talking point. According to reports, this was a key part of Guenther Steiner’s departure.

As revealed by The Race, Steiner wanted additional investment into the team over the next few years. However, Gene Haas did not share this opinion.

Instead, the American owner believes the team is underachieving. For Gene Haas, the priority is to become more efficient rather than invest in new infrastructure and facilities.

Therefore, it seems Haas F1 will continue operating on their historic model of minimal spending. Although this produced some success from 2016-18, it has been a limiting factor in recent years.

Given the growing financial muscle of their rivals, it is difficult to foresee how this approach can be sustainable.

Regardless, only months before the 2024 season, Guenther Steiner’s time has run out. Team owner Gene Haas replaced the 58-year-old with Ayao Komatsu, formerly director of engineering.

Haas

Gene Haas explained his decision:

“I’d like to start by extending my thanks to Guenther Steiner for all his hard work over the past decade, and I wish him well for the future.

“Moving forward as an organisation, it was clear we need to improve our on-track performances. In appointing Ayao Komatsu as Team Principal we fundamentally have engineering at the heart of our management.”

“We have had some successes, but we need to be consistent in delivering results that help us reach our wider goals as an organisation.

“We need to be efficient with the resources we have, but improving our design and engineering capability is key to our success as a team. I’m looking forward to working with Ayao and fundamentally ensuring that we maximise our potential – this truly reflects my desire to compete properly in Formula 1.”

Ayao Komatsu has also discussed the situation:

“I’m naturally very excited to have the opportunity to be Team Principal at MoneyGram Haas F1 Team.

“Having been with the team since its track-debut back in 2016 I’m obviously passionately invested in its success in Formula 1. I’m looking forward to leading our program and the various competitive operations internally to ensure we can build a structure that produces improved on-track performances.”

“We are a performance-based business. We obviously haven’t been competitive enough recently, which has been a source of frustration for us all.

“We have amazing support from Gene and our various partners. And we want to mirror their enthusiasm with an improved on-track product. We have a great team of people across Kannapolis, Banbury and Maranello. Together, I know we can achieve the kind of results we’re capable of.”
