James Vowles: Williams to unlock “untapped potential” in 2024

Williams team principal James Vowles outlines the team’s expectations with their incoming 2024 F1 challenger. The British engineer is hopeful that significant lap time can be unlocked relative to last season.

The Grove-based team’s progression last season was very well documented. Alex Albon can be thanked for this, regularly optimising the FW45 and either competing for points or scoring them outright.

For a team that has languished at the back for so long, this was a notable change. However, this means that 2024 must maintain this promising upward trajectory.

Williams managed to clinch 7th overall last season, barely keeping ahead of the resurgent AlphaTauri.

With the Faenza outfit likely to make another step forward this year, James Vowles cannot allow his team to stagnate. In a sport where Williams is still outgunned economically and in terms of infrastructure, starting the year with a strong baseline will be critical.

Improvements from Logan Sargeant will also be critical.

Whilst the American driver was given the benefit of the doubt after a fairly tame rookie season, this luxury will not be afforded in 2024.

In an F1 grid with a high level of talent across the field, Sargeant must ensure that he contributes meaningfully.

Vowles remains pragmatic

Speaking to motorsport.com, James Vowles outlined his expectations for the upcoming year:

“We’ve added downforce, but really, the main thing we’ve worked on is the behaviour and characteristics of the car.

“I think there’s untapped potential, so we can make some steps forward.

“How much, however, is difficult to say. I’m satisfied with the work we’re doing.

“But I bet if you interview all the teams, they’ll tell you – “I’m satisfied with the work we’re doing'”.

Vowles also identifies the significance of the 2026 regulations, which represent the best chance for Williams to make a tangible leap.

Despite their impressive 2023 campaign, expecting the British team to become a top 6 outfit seems an unrealistic expectation.

Arguably, the more feasible goal is to solidify their position from last season, staying competitive until they can bridge their infrastructural and financial deficit.
