During the second day of testing, Fernando Alonso explained the difficulties associated with a lack of testing. He outlined the impact such limited preparation can have on a new campaign.

In traditional Alonso style, he expressed his point of view without mincing words.

“It’s difficult to say where we are. They’re just tests. Our program is constantly changing.

“With these rules, it is difficult to understand how to do it,” commented the driver from Oviedo.

Fernando Alonso eloquently explained how a lack of testing is not appropriate for Formula 1:

“A day and a half for each driver to do a world championship.

“It’s as if in football or in tennis, I changed the balls and then let the players try just one day before the tournaments.

“We are the most technologically advanced sport, and this is ridiculous.”

Alonso

We could define it as a deep break that Alonso made in Formula 1. This statement is certainly not unfounded, given the need for teams and drivers to increase their time on track to test outside of race weekends

In this scenario, situations such as that of today’s morning with the problem with a manhole which prevented the session from running smoothly, prove to be further penalising.

Alonso then mentioned the possibility of introducing the second car for the teams to the pre-season tests, especially with a view to an imminent GP on the same circuit:

“I don’t know the additional costs of bringing both cars to the track, given that in a week, let’s run here.

“I think we all more or less have two cars ready. Having two cars ready, I think, is the minimum for a professional sport like ours.”

Such direct words represent the thoughts of many in the paddock, although not everyone.

After all, F1’s commitment to carbon neutrality means increasing testing could be counter-productive.
