Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has explained that Carlos Sainz is a viable candidate to join the team next season. The Silver Arrows have been linked with several different names ahead of 2025. This is partly thanks to Toto Wolff, who has mentioned several drivers who are on the Mercedes shortlist for next year. Still, these very transparent comments provide insights into the decision-making process at Brackley.

Lewis Hamilton’s departure from Mercedes is, for obvious reasons, a devastating blow. The most recent evidence of the 7-time Champion’s calibre (if one was necessary) came today in Shanghai’s Sprint qualifying. Beyond his on-track performances, Hamilton’s exit means the team are losing arguably the biggest name in Formula 1.

This begs the question, therefore, who the German constructor will choose to replace him. At the Japanese GP, Toto Wolff broadly outlined the two paths available to the team. The first, according to the Mercedes team principal, is a young driver. Kimi Antonelli would be the option in this scenario, with Wolff outlining that the team’s current struggles could give the 17-year a relatively low-pressure debut.

Meanwhile, a more established name is also being considered. Although Wolff did not directly reference Carlos Sainz in Suzuka, he has confirmed to Sky Germany earlier today that the Spaniard is an option. However, he also added his usual disclaimers about the driver market – emphasising there is no rush to make a decision.

Only a few days ago, Kimi Antonelli completed his first F1 test with Mercedes. The team is obviously investing substantial resources into fast-tracking his development. Potentially, this could see the Italian debut next season.

Still, there are obvious risks associated with such a move. The youngster has not even completed a handful of races in Formula 2. With this in mind, Carlos Sainz is a very strong short and medium-term option.

The three-time race winner is performing very well this season, building upon his already impressive F1 resume. Undoubtedly, he could reinforce George Russell and form a formidable line-up at the Championship-winning team.

Still, there is also the Sainz perspective to consider. Audi is willing to offer him the contractual stability that – at present – Mercedes is unlikely to match. In this context, there are still many dominoes that need to fall before a final call is made for 2025.
